- A mountain bike marathon across 4 countries
- Cycling through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy
- Ride the Giro d`Italia`s Gavia Pass
- Follows the Trans Alp race route
- A superb European mountain biking holiday
Recognised as the original epic mountain bike marathon, the Trans Alp, has been run each July since the late 90's and makes a complete traverse of the Alps from Füssen in Germany to Riva del Garda in Italy. Like the Tour du France, the race stages change each year, but roughly follow the same line. Our epic mountain bike holiday makes use of many well-established stages of the Trans Alp, but also links tarmac sections to bring the route within the reach of regular bikers. We start out with a group transfer from Munich to the lush Alpine meadows surrounding the market town of Mittenwald in Bavaria. From here, we bike into the Austrian Tirol region and pick up the dramatic trail of the ancient Roman path, the Via Claudia Augusta. There is a little of everything: rough gravel, tricky trail passages, easy stretches to just ride, with lots of biking uphill and downhill, but not too much at any one time. There is also, of course, a great deal of fabulous Alpine scenery - forests, lakes and spectacular mountains. After a brief visit to the Swiss Muenster Valley, a delightful stretch of riding through the beautiful Italian Dolomites and down to the shores of Lake Garda completes this unique mountain biking adventure holiday.

Trip Guide
FAT TYRE ADVENTURE - Bike from Germany to Italy across the Alps. Definitely knobbly tyres are best for the majority of the journey but a spare set of semi slicks will come in handy with the right weather on some sections. This mountain bike holiday is based on the variable Trans Alp race route. It includes a mix of long, steady climbs and exciting downhill sections. Mostly on gravel roads and well-groomed singletrack it is not a super technical ride. However, you can expect to be riding between 6 and 8 hours on most of the 7 stages and there is a total of a little more than 10,000 metres of ascent and descent throughout the ride. There will be a couple of sections where you need to carry or push your bike. This is real, challenging mountain biking at its very best and will provide a rewarding adventure for fit and competent mountain bikers. Staying in comfortable, family-run hotels, usually in small mountain villages, we will experience the whole spectrum of Alpine life and scenery in three countries. This mountain bike holiday is graded at the top of our INTERMEDIATE grade. The support vehicle carries the group's baggage between hotels, but cannot closely follow the route.
