Book Trip
Family Trekking holiday to Nepal Himalayan families trekking holiday, Nepal

  • A real Himalayan family trekking holiday
  • Soak up the sights and smells of Kathmandu
  • Meet the Sherpa people
  • Comfortable lodge accommodation
  • Classic Everest views from Thangboche

As an introduction to this great new trip, we have a full day to soak up the sights and sounds of downtown Kathmandu. With its bustling market streets and numerous colourful temples, dedicated to both the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, the city provides a fantastic first taste of Asia - and our included city tour will highlight some of the main attractions. Then, after taking the exciting flight to Lukla in the mountainous Khumbu district, we allow 3 days for the short trek to Namche Bazaar, stopping off each night in comfortable lodges and accompanied by a first-rate Nepalese tour guide and a team of Sherpas and porters. With a day to explore the thriving Sherpa capital, followed by 2 short days up to the monastery village of Thangboche, we are able to enjoy some fantastic mountain scenery, including views of Mount Everest and the striking Ama Dablam. During our easy-paced walking tour will have the chance to visit a number of pretty Sherpa villages and learn a little about the way of life of these hardy Tibetan-speaking people. If you are looking to introduce your children to the delights of real Himalayan trekking, this trip has been purpose-made for youngsters, with short trekking days, a good standard of accommodation and the back-up of KE's 20 years of experience in this part of the world.

Is it for you and your family?  Suitable for children aged 10+

This itinerary is aimed at families with older children who are used to doing some hillwalking. Paying particular attention to acclimatisation, we have allowed 6 days for the trek up to our high point at Thyangboche at 3860 metres. Underfoot conditions are good throughout and we have built the trip around using a good standard of lodge accommodation, with full Sherpa support and a first-rate Nepalese tour guide.

Trip Guide

The trekking conditions on this family holiday are relatively easy and designed to be within the capabilities of children of 10 years and older. We will follow good paths and yak trails throughout. Additionally, as the Khumbu is Nepal's most popular trekking destination, the area is well supplied with teashops and lodges and the trails between these are well used and present easy walking conditions. It should be noted however, that trekking at altitudes above 3000m. / 10,000ft. makes greater demands on the body than walking at low elevations, and is of itself challenging even for fit hikers. Our itinerary is well staged to allow the best possible acclimatisation for you and your family, with an extra night in Namche Bazaar and splitting some of the standard trekking days into shorter sections. You will need to ensure you and your family are physically prepared for the trek and you should be comfortable with walking for 4 to 6 hours each day. Following the lower part of the classic walk-in to the south base camp of Everest should be within the capabilities of occasional hikers and fit, active children.
