Belgians are fanatical about cycling and one of the country's few legendary international sportsmen is Eddy Merckx, whose string of classics wins included 5 Tours de France. He trained on the famous cobbled climbs of the Tour of Flanders, which is the setting for our unique cycling tour. Based in the small gothic town of Deinze, we use the excellent bike-friendly sports centre as our home for the week. With first-rate local guides and a day-ride format, we cycle the long cobbled section from Kerkgate to Wolvenberg Hill, where the Tour of Flanders traditionally splits each year. We also ride the famous 'Vesten and Muur', involving 1100 metres of cobbled climbing and a maximum gradient of 20%. Then, after completing the final section of the Paris-Roubaix, we have the unusual privilege of being able to take a refreshing cold shower in the old Velodrome building. We also visit the reality museum CRVV (with Freddy Maertens as guide), the brewery in Gavere for a taste of traditional Belgian beer and go to the Eddy Merckx Velodrome in Ghent for a track racing introduction. An action packed week long cycling holiday of culture, beer and biking, where you will definitely experience the 'rumble of kassen', as the Flemish call cycling over the cobbles.
