Peru Family Adventure at Machu Picchu Peru Family Adventure

  • Cusco and it`s fascinating mix of Inca and Spanish architecture
  • Horseriding to the famous Inca sites above Cusco including Sacsayhuaman
  • Rafting and biking in the Sacred Valley of the Incas
  • Trekking on the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • The incomparable Machu Picchu

Starting out with some fun and safe rafting on the scenic Urubamba River, this unique Peruvian family adventure continues with an exploration on horse-back (or on foot, if preferred) amongst some of the impressive Inca ruins that surround the Andean city of Cusco. We then descend to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where, from our comfortable accommodation in a lovely old hacienda, we visit the traditional Indian market at Pisac and have the option of a day's fun (and largely downhill) mountain biking, which takes us by way of the picturesque saltpans at Maras. The adventure continues with the classic 1-day Inca Trail hike up to the Sun Gate, where we have our first glimpse of Machu Picchu (Note: If Inca Trail permits are not available at the time of booking, an alternative activity to the Royal Inca Trail is available which will still include a visit to Machu Picchu). Then, after a night in the colourful town of Aguas Calientes (with the chance to try out the hot springs), we make an early morning return to the 'Lost City of the Incas' and spend most of the day there, including a tour with a specialist guide. In the afternoon, we take the famous train ride back to Cusco. A free day in this former capital of Peru allows us time to catch our breath and to do a bit of independent sightseeing, before travelling home or setting out on one of the excellent extension options. This is an unbeatable Peruvian adventure suitable for families with children aged 10 and over and there are departures that coincide with most of the school holidays.

Trip Guide

Our day’s trek on the Royal Inca Trail is suitable for children of 10 years and upwards. Most of the walking is on well-defined tracks, including some sections of ancient Inca highways, which are paved with stone in places. During the optional biking part of the holiday we will be following jeep roads, with some sections of paved road and some sections of footpath. The biking is principally downhill or on the level. It is not strenuous or technically difficult and it is suitable for a range of skills although some previous off-road biking is recommended. There is always the option of taking the support vehicle if you don’t fancy any part of the riding. For the rafting we have chosen a stretch of the Urubamba River, offering whitewater rafting which varies between River Grade 1 and River Grade 3. This is the easy end of rafting and although the rapids that we run will be quite exciting they are very safe. Comprehensive instruction is given by our professional river guides prior to setting off and full safety equipment and support is used throughout. During the canoeing on day 4 we will find a quieter stretch of the river.  All of our guides are extensively trained in river safety and first-aid and we provide high bouyancy jackets and helmets.

Make the Adventure Your Own
Extend your holiday with a visit to the Amazon rainforest and/or to Lake Titicaca. Three and 4-day jungle lodge packages can easily be arranged in the excellent Tambopata Reserve, whilst a visit to Lake Titicaca, including the Orient Express train and a boat ride out to the floating reed islands of the Uros and to Amantani Island also takes 4 days.
