Book Trip
Ascent of Mount Ararat Trekking holiday in Turkey

  • A fascinating journey to the highest peak in EasternTurkey
  • Far-reaching views across Armenia from the summit of Ararat
  • A remote summit but relatively easy trekking
  • Exploring Istanbul and especially the stunning blue mosque
  • A real adventure travel holiday at final resting place of Noah`s Ark

This walking holiday trekking to the summit of Mount Ararat in Turkey is a true adventure travel experience. Close to Turkey's border with Armenia and unclimbed until the early 19th Century, Mount Ararat (5165m/16940ft) is the final resting place of Noah's Ark - according to the Old Testament. Whatever its place in history, this extinct volcano provides an unusual and quite challenging walking and mountaineering objective. After a day spent exploring the minarets and markets of Istanbul, we fly east to the bustling frontier town of Dogubeyazit. From here, it is a short approach to Mount Ararat, which we climb over a period of 5 days. Making a pre-dawn start from our high camp, we will be trekking across the easy-angled snow slopes leading to the summit of Mount Ararat. Only recently accessible, KE trekking groups have visited Mount Ararat in each of the last 6 years and made ascents of what is surely one of the world's most enigmatic peaks. A short but extremely rewarding walking adventure holiday trekking in a very different corner of the world.

Trip Guide

This is not a long or sustained trekking holiday. However, the height gain of very nearly 3000 metres (10,000 feet) from the village of Eli to Ararat's summit is considerable. Two 5-hour trekking days (separated by an acclimatisation and rest day) take us to our high camp on the mountain. The summit day will be longer, something of the order of 10 hours in total. Underfoot conditions will vary from easy trails through upland meadow to zig-zag paths on volcanic scree. The uppermost slopes of the mountain are snow-covered and present a short, low-angle snow slope.
