A new and exciting adventure trekking holiday walking in the Hoggar Mountains of Algeria. Dominating Algeria's southern frontier regions, the Hoggar is one of the biggest mountain ranges in the Sahara. Rising abruptly out of the desert, this weird and wonderful collection of basalt towers, domes and mesas forms the backdrop to a magical walking week. From the archetypal desert town of Tamanrasset, we set off to trek around the Atakor Massif, accompanied by our Tuareg guide and team of baggage camels. We cross open, wadis and penetrate narrow gorges between rock formations, stopping to explore hidden rock art sites and to shelter from the sun beneath shading acacias. Our journey includes the chance to hike to the top of Algeria's highest summit, Jabal Tahat (2908m) and to visit the hermitage of Pere Foucauld on the high plateau of Assekrem. The sunset views from the latter are worth the holiday price on their own. This is a simply brilliant trip for anyone who loves deserts.
Is this holiday for you?
This is not a long or very sustained trekking trip. Assisted by baggage camels, we will trek for 6 days through a remarkable mountain area. We will walk for around 5 hours each day, covering approximately 15 kilometres and ascending and descending 600 metres or more on some days. Underfoot conditions will included desert trails, as well as some easy scrambling on scree and bare rock. The altitudes attained during this trip should not cause problems with respect to acclimatisation. At the time of year that we will be visiting southern Algeria (late autumn through to early spring) it will not be extremely hot during the day. However, we might encounter day-time temperatures as high as 30°C and sun protection and adequate hydration are important considerations.
