Baby PandaGreat Wall of China

  • A family touring holiday in the Land of the Dragon
  • Walk along the Great Wall of China
  • See the Terracotta Army at Xi`an
  • Visit Chengdu Panda Base
  • Learn to cook Chinese and learn Kung Fu

Steeped in history and with a wealth of outstanding highlights, the People's Republic of China is one of the most exciting of our family holiday destinations. We begin in the extraordinary city of Beijing, with visits to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Making an excursion to the Great Wall of China, we hike for a couple of hours on this ‘Wonder of the World', before taking the overnight train to Luoyang. Here, we visit the Shaolin Temple and the whole family can take a short lesson at the Kung Fu school. Travelling on to Xi'an, we bike around the city wall, cook a traditional meal with a local family and check out the spellbinding 8000-strong Terracotta Army that guards the burial site of the Emperor Qin. We then fly to Chengdu and spend time at the Panda Research Base, dedicated to the conservation of the giant panda. The amazing tree-cloaked limestone formations of Yangshuo are next on our tick-list and here we take a boat ride on the Li River and also enjoy a day of biking (or hiking). A final city tour amongst the hustle and bustle of Shanghai, including a boat trip along its famous waterfront, brings to an end this family holiday of a lifetime.

Is this holiday for you?

This trip is designed for families to experience some of the highlights of this incredible country. We visit no less that six UNESCO World Heritage sites during the 2-week holiday. The emphasis is touring and sightseeing and making it fun for the family at the same time. Although this is not a hiking holiday, there will be some relatively easy walks of up to  2 hours to enable the family to fully experience sights such as the Great Wall. During the holiday there is a boat journey on the Li River where buoyancy aids/life jackets are provided. There are 2 days where we have easy bicycle rides and on both of these days there are other options if any family members do not wish cycle. The accommodation we use throughout the tour is very comfortable in well-located hotels at 3 star or above standard. There is one night spent on board a sleeper train in 'soft' (first) class. China is a big country and there is a fair amount of distance covered over the 2 weeks. However, we cover the larger distances using internal flights or sleeper train, and shorter transfers are in a mix of train, boat and by road which all adds to the interest and excitement of travelling. This holiday is suitable for families with children of 8 years and above.
