  • Highlights of Mongolia tour
  • Follow in the footsteps of Genghis Khan
  • 3-day hike through the Gobi Steppe beneath Zorgol Khairkhan
  • Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery
  • Sleep in a traditional ger

Providing a fantastic opportunity to discover the best of Mongolia, this holiday starts out in the Terelj National Park, where we can learn a little of the history and culture of Genghis Khan and also spend a night in a traditional ger. Then, after a visit to the Manzushir Monastery, we will hike for 3 days across the rich grassland ‘steppes' in the shadow of the red granite peak, Zorgol Khairkhan (1668m). Meeting nomadic herders on our route, our last camp is close to the sand dunes at Arburd on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Continuing our journey westwards, we will explore amongst the lovely forested valleys of the the Khustai National Park, home of the endangered Przewalski's wild horse, as well as wolf and elk. The culmination of our time in Mongolia is our visit to Genghis Khan's ancient capital of Karakorum and the nearby, 16th century Buddhist monastery of Erdene Zuu. Including time for sightseeing in Ulaanbaatar, this is a great introduction to Mongolia.

Is this holiday for you?

This holiday is part of our discovery range of tours. The holiday does involve some days of walking including a 3-day mini trek across the Gobi Steppe when you will be walking for approximately 15 kilometres each day. However, the focus of the holiday is very much on getting to know the country and its peoples and the walking element is not particularly difficult. We will make frequent stops along the way to discover the hidden gems of the steppe and to interact with the nomads we encounter. The holiday is suitable for any active, adventure minded person.
