Sandwiched between the peaks of the Saipal Himal and the Tibetan border, Nepal's remote and roadless region of Humla is reached via the grass airstrip at Simikot. Here, this exciting new trekking holiday begins in an area of peaceful villages and deep valleys, with clear streams and abundant forest. Following the Karnali River and the pilgrim's trail towards Mount Kailas in Tibet, we reach the border settlement of Hilsa after 6 days. Turning eastwards and crossing a high pass, we drop down into the isolated and starkly beautiful Buddhist outpost of Limi, where we find a string of widespread settlements each with its own white-painted gompa. This is a special part of the world, whose inhabitants are quite unused to meeting outsiders. Climbing to exit the valley at the prayer-flagged Nyalu La (4950m), the Tibetan peak of Gurla Mandata (7694m) is prominent to the north-east. An excellent circuit trek well off the 'beaten track'.

This trekking holiday into the restricted area of Humla and Limi offers a variety of trekking conditions, with maintained trails, well trodden by local people as well as less regularly used routes over shale and scree. Most days are of only modest length (4 to 5 hours of trekking) with just a couple of longer days. There are a couple of high pass crossings and some short sections of rough trail and rock-cut trail across steep valley sides. This trip is a grade easier than the Annapurna Circuit, but in a much more remote location. We have placed it at the lower end of the DEMANDING grade. With 10 consecutive days above 3000 metres, this is a reasonably high-level trek and a good level of fitness is required.
