Arctic wilderness hiking in East GreenlandArctic wilderness hiking in East Greenland

  • Arctic wilderness hiking in East Greenland
  • Dramatic granite peak landscapes
  • Seashore camping and viewpoint peaks
  • Visit remote Inuit communities
  • Includes 2 nights in Keflavik, Iceland

With its vast central icecap and rugged, fjord-cut eastern coastline, Greenland has one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. This polar hiking holiday shows this off to great effect, as we explore amongst the fjords and viewpoint summits in the vicinity of the town of Kulusuk. After an initial helicopter ride to the Inuit village of Tasiilaq, we have the assistance of boat transfers as we explore the most scenic locations amongst the at times iceberg-filled fjords. A succession of stunning hikes, traversing trackless terrain and with some long days of up to 8 hours duration, takes us through flower-carpeted valleys and along the rugged coastlines to exceptional viewpoints. Each night, we set up camp in a scenic place and there is lots of time for rest and relaxation. We also visit the red, yellow and blue-painted villages of the local Inuit people, such as Tiniteqilaaq, home to hardy fishermen and hunters. Close to the Arctic Circle, this is a very different trekking holiday!

Please note that we are selling this trip in conjunction with our partners at Hauser (Germany's leading independent adventure travel operator). As a result, these groups, which are led by an English-speaking German guide, may have an interesting cosmopolitan mix.

Is this holiday for you?

Given good weather conditions, this is a not-too-difficult hiking holiday at low elevation. However, if the weather is not cooperative (conditions can be wintry in Greenland, even in the summer) it becomes rather tougher and you should be prepared for this. There is a lot of rough ground to cover; involving scree, moraine and trackless moorland and, especially if the weather is unfavourable, there will be some long days of up to 8 hours. Walking between remote camping places, you will carry just a small rucksack with your day-gear and bivvy bag, as the trip is boat supported. We have taken the remote nature of the location into account in giving this holiday its grading of 6. This holiday is suitable for regular hikers with good physical condition and a spirit of adventure.
