The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum.

You must bring the following items:

Hiking boots

Socks

Underwear

Thermal (Long John) underwear

Lightweight trekking trousers / pants

Lightweight waterproof overtrousers / rainpants

Lightweight windproof / waterproof jacket

At least 1 long sleeve shirt with collar (for sun protection)

T-shirts and/or casual shirts

Warm jacket (eg. Thick fleece or down jacket)

Sunhat

Warm hat (for chilly evenings/mornings in the desert)

Gloves

Eyewear - Sunglasses

Daypack of approx. 30 litres / 1800 cubic inches capacity

Headtorch / headlamp and spare batteries

Sun protection (including sunscreen, total bloc for lips, nose etc.)

Water bottles 2 x 1 litre or 2-3 litre platypus hydration pack.

4 season sleeping bag

Ear Plugs

Washbag and toiletries

Antibacterial handwash

Baby wipes

Small travel towel

Selection of dry bags (to keep trek bag contents dry)

Small padlock (to lock your KE kit bag)

Cigarette lighter (to burn toilet paper)

Basic First Aid Kit including: a broad spectrum antibiotic, antiseptic cream, diarrhoea treatment (Imodium), painkillers, plasters/blister treatment, glucose tablets and re-hydration salts (Dioralite).

The following items are optional:

Trainers / sneakers or sandals

Spare laces

Shorts

Thermarest (a thin foam mattress is provided)

Sleeping bag liner

Trekking poles

Insect repellant

Camera, spare memory card and battery

Travel clothes

Pocket-knife (note: always pack sharp objects in hold baggage)

Repair kit – (eg. needle, thread, duct tape)

Notes

Whilst day-time temperatures vary between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade, night-time temperatures can fall below freezing in the desert. We therefore recommend bringing a 3-4 season sleeping bag and a warmer jacket such as a down-filled jacket.

Please note that binoculars are not allowed in Algeria. If found they will be confiscated at customs.
