North of Pokhara, one of the greatest of Himalayan treks to the Annapurna Sanctuary, follows the valley of the Modi Khola into the heart of the Annapurnas. Here, giant peaks such as Annapurna 1, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre encircle the natural amphitheatre known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. During 10 days of hiking, this exciting trekking holiday using lodges throughout, manages to show off the whole range of stunning Nepalese landscapes, from pretty villages to soaring, snow-capped summits. This is a short and relatively straightforward trekking holiday in Nepal. We allow six days for our approach to the Annapurna South Basecamp from Pokhara, and this pace is governed by our need to acclimatise properly, rather than by the actual distance which we are prepared to walk each day. The distances covered each day are short, averaging about 5 or 6 miles, and as this is a very popular trekking route, the paths are mostly good. However, the trails are always either steeply up or down, and in the lush forest of the approach to the Annapurna Sanctuary the underfoot conditions can be slippery in places. The same conditions apply to our walk-out via Ghorepani. It should be noted that trekking at altitudes above 3000m. / 10,000ft. makes greater demands on the body than walking at low elevations, and is of itself challenging even for fit hikers. Our itinerary is well staged to allow the best possible acclimatisation. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trek and you should be comfortable with walking for 4 to 6 hours each day and for several days continuously.
