The Republic of Armenia is landlocked in the southern Caucasus and is bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. It is situated at the cultural, historical and religious crossroads of Europe and Asia. The country has a total area of 29,743 square kilometers and the terrain is mostly mountainous, with fast flowing rivers and few forests. The climate is cold in winter and hot in summer. The highest point is 4090m/13,419ft on Mount Aragats. Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in the region at 5165m/16940ft no longer lies within with boundaries of Armenia, but in Turkey, however Armenians still see it as the symbol of their lands. Lake Sevan is the largest body of water in Armenia accounting for 5% of the country's land area.
The time in Armenia is GMT + 4 hours.
The official language of Armenia is Armenian, an Indo-European language that has its own script, the Armenian alphabet, with 38 letters. We recommend that you take a pocket phrase book and learn some basics such as common greetings.
The height of the summer is perfect for a trekking holiday in Armenia. We run our trips in July and August when we can expect the daytime temperatures in Yerevan to be around 25°C / 77°F, dropping at night to 15°C / 59°F. At our highest camps, we can expect daytime temperatures to be no higher than 15°C / 59°F (although it may well feel hotter than this) and nighttime temperatures will fall to 5°C / 41°F. At this time of year, we will be unlucky to experience significant amounts of rain.
Armenia's unit of currency is the Armenian Dram. For up to date exchange rates visit: www.xe.com
Do not try to obtain any local currency (Armenian Dram) before you arrive in the country. You can withdraw cash from ATM's at Yerevan Airport and in Yerevan itself, using a credit card or a debit card.
A passport with at least 6 months validity is required. Visas are not required by UK and EU passport holders, but ARE required by USA passport holders. You must check the individual visa requirements for your chosen holiday. The link to detailed visa information for each trip can be found on the trip page.
