Walking in the Balkan Borderlands

Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Peja. A single, timed private group transfer from Pristina airport is provided with the local guide accompanying the group to the hotel. Time permitting we may visit the UNESCO-listed Decani Monastery, which is close to Peja. KE group package services begin with dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 2: Today we follow the dramatic road through the Rugova Gorge, paying a visit to the historic Patriachate of Pec Monastery en route. We take lunch with a local family in their simple guesthouse in the village of Reke e Allages and then begin our hike through the meadows and villages of the Rugova Mountains. Total walk distance 10km, 500m of ascent, 900m of descent. Approx 5 hours walking.
Day 3: Departing our accommodation on foot, we follow a path through forest and glacial alpine lakes as we begin our ascent to today's highpoint of the Jelenak Pass (2250m). On descent, we make the first of our Balkan border crossings from Kosovo into Montenegro and take a short transfer to our accommodation in Gusinje. Walk distance 14km, 1150m of ascent, 1000m of descent. Approx 8 hours walking.
Day 4: We take a short transfer to the start of our walk, and cross the border on foot from Montenegro into Albania, by way of the peak Talijanca (2056m). The views of Albania's Accursed (Prokletije) Mountains are stunning. Descending to the valley of Bordolescit we experience true Albanian hospitality in a local guesthouse for the night. 10km, 925m of ascent, 730m of descent. Approx 6 hours walking.
Day 5: Hiking from the guesthouse, we ascend through forest to high pastures and cross a high pass at 1800m affording spectacular views of the rugged and remote Albanian Alps. After a short stop at the village of Nikc, our private transport will take us over the border into Montenegro and to Virpazar, on the shores of Lake Skadar. 12.5km, 600m of ascent, 1300m of descent. Approx 6 hours walking.
Day 6: Lake Skadar straddles the Montenegro/Albania border and we take a relaxing morning boat journey across the clear waters of the lake. We transfer to Cetinje, the former capital, where we take lunch before alighting our vehicle at the top of a high pass from where we descend into the UNESCO Bay of Kotor. 6.5km, 900m of descent. Approx 3.5 hours walking.
Day 7: Dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an old military route forms part of our trek atop the Vrmac ridge with views of the bays of Kotor and Tivat. On return to our hotel there will be some free time to explore the old town or take a trip to visit Perast and the Lady of the Rock church before we enjoy a celebratory dinner. 13km, 800m of ascent, 700m of descent. Approx 5 hours walking.
Day 8: After breakfast, there is a group transfer to Dubrovnik Airport (approx 2 hours). KE Land Only package services end on arrival at Dubrovnik Airport.
