Off The Beaten Track

This is a rarely-undertaken trek through a wild and beautiful corner of the Indian Himalaya

  • A stunning trek across the majestic peaks of the Pir Panjal
  • Unspoiled and off the beaten track trekking in India
  • Crossing the beautiful and wild Kaliheni and Thamser passes
  • Free morning in McLeod Ganj home of the Dalai Lama
  • The remote and traditional village of Bara Bhangal

From Manali in the Kulu Valley, this adventurous trekking holiday heads west into the mountains of the Pir Panjal, a remote and little-visited area that is home to nomadic Gaddi shepherds during the summer months. Trekking through untouched forest and upland meadows, and including 2 rest days for acclimatisation and exploration, we climb to cross the spectacular Kaliheni Pass (4835m) where the views extend to glaciers and snow-capped peaks in all directions. Beyond this pass, we trek for 3 days in a beautiful hidden valley, losing height steadily en route to the isolated village of Bara Bhangal. From here it's up again, following good shepherds trails to eventually reach the moraine, snow and ice of the Thamser Pass (4750m). Here, we cross the watershed of the Dhaula Dhar range and begin our long descent into the Kangra Valley. Before returning to Delhi, this exceptional holiday makes time for a visit to McLeod Ganj, colourful home of the Dalai Lama. This is the perfect holiday for anyone looking for a challenging trek through a wide variety of scenery well away from the beaten trail and the opportunity to experience first hand, unspoiled Himalayan rural life.

Is this holiday for you?

This is a demanding trekking holiday, involving 13 days of trekking during the traverse of a remote region, where trails may be indistinct. Most days are long and especially those days when we cross the high passes of our route, the Kaliheni Pass and the Thamser Pass. However, we have a couple of rest and acclimatisation days ahead of the first pass crossing, to ensure that group members are well prepared. On some days during the holiday we will be walking on rough moraine including over boulders and glacier ice. Participants should be physically fit and comfortable with walking for up to 8 hours on some days, across a variety of terrain with some off-trail hiking.
