- A journey to the heart of the Bhutanese Kingdom
This excellent adventure holiday includes the chance to see many of Bhutan's most important towns and monasteries, as we journey to the beautiful region of Bumthang at the heart of the kingdom. From the lovely Paro Valley we drive by way of Thimpu and the historic winter capital at Punakha to the district of Bumthang in the heart of this Buddhist Kingdom. Here we stay at the town of Jakar before setting off on the sparkling 3-day 'Owl Trek' which takes us through pretty farmland and forested valleys to a high ridge in the foothills of the Himalaya, from where we have sensational views of snow-capped mountains. After our trek we visit the tranquil Phobjikha Valley where we stay in the charming village of Gantey. Gantay has been singled out by a flock of the rare and beautiful black-necked cranes who every year make a perilous journey across the Himalaya from their summer home in Tibet to overwinter in the Phobjikha Valley. As a finale to this Bhutanese holiday we visit the incredible Takstang Monastery in Paro. Known as the 'Tigers Nest' this complex of monastic buildings is built entirely on ledges on a sheer cliff face above a deep gorge. The Tigers Nest sums up evrything that is both spectacular and beautiful about this unique country.
We also have a departure in early November which visits the Nalakhar Festival - see trip code BNCF
Is this holiday for you?
This is principaly a touring and cultural holiday with an element of easy trekking. The 3-day trek traces a route between villages and monasteries to the north of the town of Jakar. Following paths used by local villagers, the conditions are nowhere difficult and the altitude attained on the trip is not extreme. This route presents a great variety of landscape type; ranging from terraced farmland, through some of the finest mixed forest in the world, to open, alpine pastureland and scenic mountain passes. As a predominantly cultural holiday with a short trek at relatively modest altitude this holiday is suitable for anyone with hiking experience. However, it is not suitable for those with no back-country or hill-walking experience at all.
