The largest untouched wilderness Nepals Terai, Bardia National Park protects 968 sq km of forest and grassland and is an ideal environment for wildlife studies. More than 30 different mammals and 200 species of bird (both resident and migratory) have been recorded as well as many of Nepals legally protected species, including the One-horned Rhinoceros, Bengal Tiger, spotted deer, the rare Asian Elephant and Gangetic Dolphin. Accommodation is at the comfortable Tiger Tops Karnali Lodge, located on the edge of the Bardia National Park. This extension starts and ends in Kathmandu.
Karnali Lodge has a total of 24 characterful rooms built in a traditional Tharu longhouse style, featuring mud-walls and thatched roofs, with high ceilings and comfortable beds with mosquito nets. The lodge has its own generator to provide electricity and hot water is available around the clock. A central thatched-roof roundhouse houses the restaurant and bar, and a campfire is lit in the evening and early mornings. On clear days, breakfast and lunch are served outside and the level of service provided is exceptional. Western and Nepali dishes are served and there is also a well-stocked bar. Many of the guides employed by the lodge are from the local Tharu community and are passionate about the wildlife and culture of the region. The lodge has excellent relations with neighbouring villages, and a village visit is a great way of learning about life in this remote part of Nepal.
