Huayna Potosi is Bolivias most straightforward and accessible 6000 metre peak. Located about 30km north of La Paz its snowy peak, visible from the city, towers above the skyline. About 1000 climbers make it to the summit every year, and it is said to be an "easy" peak. However, some previous alpine or general winter mountaineering experience is needed. The normal ascent route is a fairly straightforward glacier climb, with some crevasses and a steep climb to the summit. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with unobstructed views of the Cordillera Real, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon Basin.
