Burma in Focus with Colin Prior
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Yangon in the morning. An airport transfer will be provided. KE group package services begin with lunch at the hotel and a briefing from the local guide. After lunch, there will be a guided afternoon sightseeing tour amongst the faded British Colonial architecture. We have an evening visit to the Yangon watefront for sunset pics. Dinner and overnight in Yangon.
Day 2: After breakfast, we set out on a full day of exploration with our cameras in downtown Yangon. We will visit the bustling seafood market, Indiatown and Chinatown. We will also make a special visit at sunset to the gold-encrusted Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon's finest spectacle. We spend a second night in Yangon.
Day 3: This morning, we fly to scenic Bagan, the former capital of Burma. Here, on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, hundreds of stupas and temples were built during the period from the 11th to 13th centuries. We visit monks at a temple, take lunch in a restaurant and see many of the most striking temples. In the evening, we will find the best Pagoda skyline backdrop. Overnight at a Bagan hotel.
Day 4: We have an early start to photograph the sunrise at spectacular Minyeingone Temple. Then, after breakfast, we take a trip out to Nyaung U to photograph the golden stupa of the gilded, 11th century Shwezigon Pagoda. Here, too, we can see many aspects of Burmese life including a riverside market. In the evening, we will find another temple sunset location.
Day 5: Our final day in Bagan will start with a visit to the Shinpintharlyaung Reclining Buddha, before stopping for lunch. In the afternoon, we will focus on village life, looking to capture the timeless charm of local people working in the fields and travelling to and fro on their ox-carts. We spend a third night at our Bagan hotel.
Day 6: We have an early flight to Mandalay, where our visit begins at a monastic school and centre of weaving at the village of Palaik. After checking in at our Mandalay hotel, we will have a photographic city tour to include some of the most impressive pagodas and viewpoints. Overnight in Mandalay.
Day 7: Today, we will drive to the former capital of Amarapura and photograph the assembly of more than a thousand monks at the country's largest monastery, Mahagandayon. After lunch, we will see wood carving handicrafts and have a late afternoon session in the riverside market area.
Day 8: Today, we take a boat trip across the Irrawaddy River to Mingun. Here, we can visit the unfinished (and impressively cracked) temple of King Bodawpaya and stand beside the 90 tonne brass bell he had cast to adorn the temple. Returning to Mandaylay, we take a sunset stroll across the 1200 metre-long teak bridge of U Bein.
Day 9: We have an early morning flight to Heho and drive to Nyaungshwe, where we can photograph the town's bustling waterfront action. After lunch, we will go to the jetty and take a boat ride to our hotel. The afternoon will be spent amongst the colourful floating village of Inle Lake.
Day 10: We are up early and out on the lake to capture shots of the famous, leg-rowing fishermen in the best light. After breakfast at the hotel, there is an excursion to a village of the Padaung people and a chance to photograph local handicrafts including blacksmiths. Another session on the lake in the evening light is a must.
Day 11: We take the boat back to Nyaungshwe, drive to Heho and fly to Yangon. After lunch, there is time for a final photo session in the city and for a farewell visit to the magnificent Schwedagon Pagoda. Dinner and overnight at our Yangon hotel.
Day 12: We have the early morning free for final sightseeing and souvenir buying, before transferring to Yangon Airport to catch our homeward flight. KE group package services end on arrival at the airport.
