The Bear Trail is situated in the Oulanka National Park near Kuusamo in Finnish Lapland. The Oulanka was one of Finland's first National Parks and is defined by the Oulankajoki River. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is also home to a wide variety of wildlife. During our week of trekking we follow the twists and turns of the river through hill country and pine forest. Making use of simple forest cabins and cottages and using pulka-pulling huskies in support allows us to enter deep into the Park carrying only a light backpack. This is a true wilderness journey into an area which can only be reached by snowshoe or ski.

Is this holiday for you?

We have given this trip the overall grade of MODERATE. This takes into account the relative low altitude of the trek, the fact that we are sleeping in comfortable cabins and that we are using huskies to haul our food and equipment. However, a trip of this nature is notoriously difficult to grade since differing snow conditions from one season to the next can dramatically alter the difficulty of the terrain and you should be prepared for this. For the most part we will be following summer hiking trails which should offer straightforward snowshoeing, though there are some sections where we will be travelling on frozen rivers.
