Tucked away amongst the high ridges of the Central Atlas of Morocco, the stunningly beautiful Bougmez Valley has managed to preserve a traditional way of life that closely follows the seasons and is based on agriculture and the herding of livestock. Just 4 hours from Marrakech, it is the perfect place for this relaxing walking holiday offering a week of easy hiking. Our holiday base in the Bougmez Valley is the lovely Touda Berber Lodge in the pretty village of Zawyat Oulmzi. With comfortable en-suite rooms and great Moroccan cuisine, this family-run guesthouse offers all the comforts of home, whilst providing an authentic taste of Moroccan Berber culture. During this walking holiday we explore an undiscovered and unspoilt corner of the Central Atlas of Morocco. Bougmez is known locally as 'Happy Valley' because of the demeanour and friendliness of its inhabitants who we will meet in the course of our walks. Starting out with a short orientation walk on the day of our arrival we then have 3 full days of walking through vibrant green fields, Berber villages, fortified granaries and sparkling streams beneath the rolling hills and high peaks of the Central Atlas. Including a full day in Marrakech, this is a great addition to our programme of Moroccan holidays.
Is this holiday for you?
This walking holiday in the Bougmez Valley of Morocco's Central Atlas mountains does not include any difficult or sustained trekking and consists of a flexible programme of day walks. The selected walks will be at a relatively moderate altitude and for the most part, will follow good trails between villages. You should be comfortable with walking for up to 5 hours each day at a moderate pace. This holiday should be well within the capabilities of anyone of average fitness. Staying in the relative luxury of the Touda eco-lodge means that it is very easy to take a day off from any of the walks.
