Trekking the craters of Mount Cameroon

Day 1: Arrive in Douala International airport. KE Land Only package services begin with a single, timed transfer to the group hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: After breakfast at the hotel we have a first look at the bustling capital city of Cameroon on a guided tour. In the afternoon we transfer (2 hours) to the town of Buea at the foot of Mount Cameroon.
Day 3: From Buea we have a short transfer up to the starting point of our trek at around 1000 metres. Starting in lush forest we make a gradual ascent of the lower slopes of Mount Cameroon over gentle grassland slopes and then steeper slopes of lava flows and cinder scree to reach our camp at Man`s Spring (2300m.) 6 - 7 hours hiking. 1250m. ascent.
Day 4: A day for acclimatisation, we explore the fascinating lunar landscape of the summit plateau visiting the fumaroles and lava flows of the recent eruptions of 1999 and 1982. We spend a second night at Man`s Spring camp. 6 hours hiking.
Day 5: Summit day. We make an early start for the climb to the summit of Mount Cameroon. The gradient is easier today and it will take around 4 - 5 hours to each the highest [point in West Africa at 4095 metres. We descend part way down the mountain to a camp at 2850 metres. 6 - 7 hours. Ascent 1750m. / Descent 1200m.
Day 6: We complete the descent passing the Man`s Spring Camp and down into the forest, eventually reaching Buea where we check into our hotel and have the rest of the day to relax and explore.
Day 7: From Buea, we head towards Bafang, capital of Upper Nkam in the western province, the heart of the Bamileke country. Here we will meet with and learn about the Bamileke and their remarkable culture. In the late afternoon we continue to our hotel close to Nkongsamba.
Day 8: We have a full day to explore the Manengouba Mountains, with their two crater lakes known as "male" and "female". We hike around old volcanic cones and through savannah-like grasslands, and in the late afternoon, we reach the traditionally built Villa Firefly in Mbouroukou where we take dinner and stay overnight.
Day 9: We drive back to Douala with stops in several villages en-route. Arriving back in the capital we will have the use of shared 'day rooms' at the group hotel to freshen up before transferring to the airport for the return flight.
This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully.
