Straddling both Spanish and French sides of the Pyrenees, Catalonia boasts a unique cultural region, noted for it its great pride and identity and occupying a privileged location between mountains and sea. This cycling journey in the Pyrenean frontier region covers 550 kilometres of extraordinary mountain and coastal roads in both Spain and France, experiencing a wide variety of landscape and culture. Our riding starts in historic, atmospheric Girona, nicknamed City of a Thousand Sieges having been fought over in almost every century since the Roman Empire. Easy to reach from regional UK airports, Girona, is a disarmingly relaxed and understated small city whose only invading warriors are of the two wheeled variety, both pro and amateur cyclists, enticed by the excellent climate, quiet roads and challenging climbs. Ticking off Girona's fabled folklore passes of Rocacorba (902m) and El Angels (482m), we'll ride along the Mediterranean coast towards France following pine scented, shimmering coastal roads, visiting fishing ports that were such a source of inspiration to artists such as Dali, Picasso and Matisse. The mountainous Eastern Pyrenean border with France is only passable in a few places, breached by a handful of snaking road passes, and as we crisscross between Spain and France, we'll cycle the old smugglers route to the tiny French mountain hamlet of Coustouges, before a final ascent into Spain over the Col d'Ares (1513m), near the ski slopes of Campradon. This is a road bike journey full of contrast and drama, where switch back climbs, magical coastline, rich history, quirky art and tradition all blend for a cycling holiday with an eclectic twist and a unique riding experience. Recharging in comfortable, friendly, family run hand picked hotels at the end of each day, helps us to enjoy Catalonia to the full.

Is this holiday for you?

This superb road cycling holiday is suitable for any regular weekend cyclists and sportive riders. Catalonia is a road cycling dream and the number of professional cyclists owning houses in the city of Girona bear testament to this. Team Garmin-Sharp, Team Sky and love him or loathe him - Lance Armstrong have all fallen for the captivating ingredients that make cycling in Spain's Catalonia so fantastic! The road surfaces are excellent and the gradients are not overly steep and the majority of roads very quiet. We'll accumulate an enjoyable total of over 6290 metres of ascent and descent over the 6 days of cycling, with just one long day involving 2270 metres of climbing, when we make the classic Pyrenean traverse across the border frontier. However as our cycling days are totally supported, it is possible to hop into the support vehicle if you are having a bad day. At the start of the day when the group sets off biking, your kit will be loaded into the support vehicle and transported to the next overnight halt. Lunches will be taken in local cafes en route. We must stress that apart from the spares and tools you would take on any day ride you will not be required to carry any luggage. EXCELLENT BIKE HIRE IS AVAILABLE LOCALLY.
