Cappadocia and the High TaurusCappadocia and the High Taurus

  • A sparkling trekking adventure holiday in central Turkey
  • Views from the top of Mount Emler
  • Trek Cappadocia`s Red Valley at sunset
  • Taking tea at a Tauras shepherd`s camp
  • Trekking across the remote Yedigoller Plateau

The Taurus range of mountains forms a divide between Turkey's Mediterranean coast and the Anatolian Plateau. It is from this range that the great rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates spring. We have a week of trekking in the Taurus in the spectacular Aladaglar Mountains trekking by way of alpine lakes and remote passes to the Yedigoller Plateau and our highest camp at 3100 metres (10,170 feet). In the high valleys of this rarely-visited range, we will be able to meet and take tea with nomadic  Turkish shepherds and learn a little of their centuries-old way of life. The culmination of our trek is at the summit of Mount Emler (3723m / 12,215ft), which provides excellent views across the whole of the Aladaglar Massif.  At the end of our trek in the Taurus, we will transfer to nearby Cappadocia. With its wildly eroded landscapes and rock-hewn dwellings and churches, Cappadocia is one of the world's most outlandish destinations. During 3 days of trekking here, we visit many of its highlights, including the carved frescoes of Goreme, the rock pinnacles of the Ilhara Valley and the underground city of Derinkuyu. A sensational trekking holiday, with superb and varied mountain walking in two of Turkey's finest areas.

Is this holiday for you?

We start out with an 8-day trek in the Taurus Mountains of Turkey. The maximum altitude attained on this trekking holiday is not very high and we spend just 2 nights above 3000 metres / 10,000 feet on the Yedigoller Plateau. This means that altitude acclimatisation is not usually a problem. However there are a couple of days with a good deal of ascent and descent and one or two of the days are quite long. For most of the trek we follow well established trails between valleys and villages which are suitable for mules and very straightforward for trekkers. At the end of this trek we transfer to cappadocia for two days of easy walking and sightseeing.  You should ensure you are physically prepared for the trek and able to walk for 5 or 6 hours each day and for several days continuously.
