The Connemara Ramble - Walking Holiday in Ireland
Ireland, Trek & Walk, 8 days - from £995 (land only) - from €1,245 (land only) - from $1,740 (land only)
Day 1: Rendezvous at the guesthouse in the lovely village of Leenane. A single timed transfer is provided from Knock Ireland West Airport. We meet our guide and have a briefing for our Irish walking week ahead. We then find a suitable restaurant for dinner and enjoy a pint of fine Irish Guinness (optional!). Overnight guesthouse Leenane.
Day 2: After our Irish breakfast we set off on our first walk. We transfer to Mamean, the Pass of the Birds, from where we follow a pilgrims trail to the remote St Patrick's church, in the heart of the Maumturk Mtns. The walk is along a rough track and involves a short climb. We descend via different route and transfer back to Leenane. Approx 3 hrs walking. Overnight guesthouse Leenane.
Day 3: Today our walk takes us along a more challenging, but very beautiful section of the Maumturk Mountains. We climb to the summit of Letterbreckaun (Binn Bhirocian) 667m before descending along the ridge and then to Maumtourkmore. This is a spectacular day on the hill and is described by some as the finest routes in the whole of Connemara. Approx 4-5hrs walking. Overnight guesthouse Leenane.
Day 4: Today we have a relatively flat walk along the 'Famine Track' following the southern shores of Killary harbour. The track was built in 1846 and depicts some of the history of the great famine. Today the fjord like harbour is used to farm mussels and for scenic boat tours. We may see the odd pod of dolphins or an inquisitive seal in the waters. Approx 4 hrs walking. Overnight guesthouse Leenane.
Day 5: Our walk today up Tully Mountain, locally known as Letter Hill (356m), can be boggy underfoot as we ascend the lovely mountain with its bright quartz rocks and fine coastal views. In the lower slopes we pass old stone cottages and walls used to dry the peat/turf. On our return to the road head we transfer to our B&B on the Renvyle peninsula. Approx 3-4hrs walking. Overnight guesthouse.
Day 6: An easy walk today. We have some time in Clifden and then walk to Clifden Castle. Approx 2 hrs walking. Overnight guesthouse Clifden.
Day 7: Our last walk in the beautiful Connemara is a hill walk near Roundstone in the southern area and onto the Alcock and Brown site (arrival of 1st transaltantic flight). We have some great mountain views and sweeping panoramas of the coast. Approx 4-5 hrs walking. We return to Clifden and freshen up before our farewell dinner. Overnight guesthouse Clifden.
Day 8: After breakfast we have a single timed transfer back to Knock Ireland West airport for the flight home.
