Experience a world of sand, sunsets and Saharan dune walking on this adventure in Morocco. Beyond the Atlas, the road descends the palm-fringed Draa Valley to Zagora and comes to an end in the vicinity of the village of M'Hamid. Here, we plunge into the desert, as we set off to traverse the region of giant sand dunes known as Erg Chegaga. With our team of camels and their handlers, we walk for 5 or 6 hours on each of 4 days and climb for up to an hour at a time to cross the biggest dunes (some of which can be 200 metres high). Each night, we will set up camp amongst the dunes, while our local team seeks out the hidden wells from which we replenish our water supply. Rocky plateaux and the occasional tamarisk tree may break the uniformity of the rolling sand ridges, but this is the real Saharan experience, far from the nearest settlement or road. This amazing holiday can be combined with the Jebel Sahro Walking Week.
Dunes of the Sahara Traverse or Edge of Sahara Trek - which one is for me?
We offer two fantastic desert treks in Morocco and are often asked "what are the main differences between the two." If you are looking to hike to the highest sand dune in Morocco by traversing across the desert, trek for between 5 - 6 hours a day, experience 1 night at a fixed Berber camp and 4 nights of wild desert camping, then Dunes of the Sahara Traverse is perfect for you. However, if you're looking to move up a grade, hiking for between 6 - 7 hours a day, trek through some of the Sahara's most dramatic scenery, watch the sunset from the dunes of Erg Ez-Zahar, wild camp for 3 nights and experience a fixed camp for 2 nights, then our Edge of Sahara Trek ticks all those boxes.
Is this holiday for you?
This holiday involves walking for 5-6 hours on each of the 4 trekking days, over a variety of terrain from hard rock to soft desert sand. We camp for 4 nights on this holiday whilst in the desert. All our camping and personal equipment is carried by camels so it is only necessary to carry a small daypack with daily essentials such as water bottle and camera. Winter daytime temperatures in the desert are not too hot and walking at this time of year should be quite comfortable.
