demanding
Lobelias and Mt-KenyaMount Kenya and Kilimanjaro present very obvious challenges to the world's adventure travellers. We begin this exciting East African trekking holiday by heading north from Nairobi to Mount Kenya, where we undertake a superb 6-day traverse of Kenya's highest mountain via the Chogoria and Sirimon routes. KE groups encounter few other trekkers on this excellent and much under-rated peak, which also provides perfect acclimatisation for the ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. Travelling overland to Tanzania, we have chosen to climb Kilimanjaro (5894m / 19332ft) by way of the Machame Route, which leads through luxuriant rainforest and then across alpine tundra, to the glaciated crater rim of Africa's highest peak. Although these are not technically demanding mountains, they do involve a combined ascent (and descent) of 6000m / 19,600ft and even fit and experienced hikers will find this to be a challenging adventure holiday. In our opinion, this is the ultimate African high adventure.

Extensions
It is possible to exend your trip in Tanzania with a superb 3-day Safari to the Tarengire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater or why not visit the fabulous 'Spice Islands' of Zanzibar! Please contact the KE office for full details or click on the link in the lefhand banner of this page.

We also offer two alternative treks to Mount Kilimanjaro: a 9 day (8 days land only) trek to Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route or a 13 day (12 days land only) trek combining Mount Meru with Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route.

This is quite a tough trek, simply in terms of the altitude gain which is involved in climbing Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro - a combined total of more than 5000 metres (16500 feet). However, the climbing on the first of our objectives, Mount Kenya, involves rather shorter days than the Kilimanjaro climb and so provides excellent fitness and acclimatisation training for the group. Generally, there are excellent trails to follow, although high up on Kilimanjaro we do have to negotiate some sections of scree where the path will not be so well-marked. This trip has been given the DEMANDING grade on account of the quite considerable height gain and the fact that there are a couple of long trekking days.
