demanding
Close to Ladakh’s eastern border with Tibet, the remote and seldom-visited upland of the Chang Tang is coloured in a few widespread locations by unbelievably beautiful turquoise lakes. Inhabited during the summer by nomadic herders and their livestock, this high and wild area is also home to rare animals such as wolf and kiang (wild ass). Adding to the drama of this unique landscape are numerous straightforward and snow-capped peaks that offer an irresistible challenge to adventurous trekkers. After acclimatising and sightseeing in Leh, a week of hiking takes us across several 5000 metre (16,400 foot) passes to our basecamp above Karzok at the northern end of Tso Morari Lake. From here, we set out to climb an unnamed 6200 metre (20,340 foot) peak which provides a testing but technically easy ascent and outrageous views. This is a super trek and optional climb combination in a very special part of the world.
Trip Guide
We have 5 days acclimatising to the altitude in Ladakh (3500 metres / 11,500 feet at Leh), during which time we will visit several of the monasteries of the upper Indus Valley and also drive up to the Khardung La. The time that we actually spend on trek and climbing our unnamed 6200 metre (20,340 foot)peak is 11 days. Generally, on our trek across from the Leh / Manali road to the village of Karzok, we will be following good trails, which are used by the nomadic herders and their stock as they move between grazing areas. High up on our approach to the peak, we will encounter trackless areas and some potentially rougher underfoot conditions. This is not a particularly sustained trek and we have allowed plenty of time for resting and acclimatisation. However, the generally very high altitude will be a factor and the numerous passes that we cross on our route will feel quite tough.
