A superlative trekking holiday walking in the kingdom of Mustang in the Nepal Himalayas. North of the Annapurna region in the Nepal Himalaya, the ancient and mysterious 'Kingdom of Lo' (the proper title for Mustang) is geographically and culturally a part of Tibet. Off-limits as a trekking holiday destination until a decade ago, this isolated kingdom of Mustang prospered in the 15th Century, when its strategic location enabled it to dominate the salt trade between Tibet and Nepal. The excellent drover's trail which cuts through Mustang, together with a number of impressive wayside inns, are a legacy of this trade and now make for ideal trekking territory too. After a flight to Jomsom on the upper Kali Gandaki River between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, our trekking holiday to Mustang allows us to explore a weird and wonderful landscape of eroded conglomerate cliffs, colored by natural earth pigments - reds, yellows, browns and blues. Trekking across passes of up to 4000 metres (13120 feet), we will also be walking through a succession of picturesque white painted Mustang villages and Tibetan monasteries, set against a backdrop of the distant snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. We have a day to explore our ultimate destination, Lo Manthang, a fairy-tale walled city and the capital of Mustang which is quite unlike anything else in Nepal. This enlightening trekking adventure to Mustang in Nepal will surely appeal to those looking to explore a very special part of the Himalaya.
Trip Guide
This trek into the heart of Mustang offers straightforward trekking conditions throughout, following excellent trails. Additionally, with a maximum altitude of just 4000 metres/13100 feet, we do not anticipate that anyone will have too much difficulty acclimatising, though trekking at this altitude does make extra physical demands on the body and it is best to adopt a slower pace than used closer to sea level. The distance between the villages on our route governs the pacing of the trip. We will camp each night at a village, both on the walk in to and on the walk out from Lo Manthang. This means that some of the days will be quite short - only 4 hours or so, and on some days we will have longer days of 7 or 8 hours walking. First time trekkers to altitude will find these longer days quite challenging.
