This exceptional South American family holiday commences with an exploration on horse-back (or on foot if preferred) amongst some of the many impressive Inca ruins which surround the Andean city of Cusco. We then descend to the Sacred Valley of the Incas for some fun and safe rafting on the scenic Rio Urubamba. From our comfortable accommodation in a lovely old hacienda, we visit Indian markets and have the option of a day's easy mountain biking. The adventure continues with the classic day-hike up to the Sun Gate and our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. We have a whole day to enjoy this 'lost city of the Incas,' before taking the world-famous train ride back to Cusco. Three days of exploration and wildlife spotting from a lodge in the Tambopata Reserve, deep within the Amazon jungle, provides a suitably exciting conclusion to this unbeatable Peru family adventure.
Is it for you?
Suitable for children age 10 and up.
Our day's trek on the Royal Inca Trail is suitable for children of 10 years and upwards. Most of the walking is on well-defined tracks, including some sections of ancient Inca highways, which are paved with stone in places. During the optional biking part of the holiday we will be following jeep roads, with some sections of paved road and some sections of footpath. The biking is principally downhill or on the level. It is not strenuous or technically difficult and it is suitable for a range of skills including the first time off-road biker. There is always the option of taking the support vehicle if you don't fancy any part of the riding.
Safety on the river: For the rafting we have chosen a stretch of the Urubamba River, offering whitewater rafting which varies between River Grade 1 and River Grade 2. This is the easy end of rafting and though the rapids that we run will be quite exciting they are very safe Comprehensive instruction is given by our professional river guides prior to setting off and full safety equipment and support is used throughout. During the canoeing on day 5 we will find a quieter stretch of the river. Whilst there is an element of risk in every adventure, running rivers with KE should not be considered dangerous. Our safety record is outstanding. All of our guides are extensively trained in river safety and first-aid. We carry full safety and emergency gear and the contingency arrangements are well-established, should an emergency evacuation be required. You do not need previous experience to take part in a rafting trip with KE and you do not need to be athletic. However, we would encourage a reasonable level of fitness, as it will add to the enjoyment of your adventure. Whilst we recommend that you can swim, even non swimmers can safely join this rafting trip. The high buoyancy life-jackets and helmets that group members wear, ensure that you have little chance of getting into trouble should you fall in.
Note: If Inca Trail permits are not available at the time of booking, an alternative activity to the Royal Inca Trail is available. Please see 'Dates & Prices' for details.
