Our Iceland mountain bike tour is a wild roller-coaster journey in a land unlike any other. With surprises round every corner it's a guaranteed sensory overload for bikers. From the incredible series of waterfalls at Haifoss, the biking is a mixture of jeep and singletrack through the remote Tolkienesque landscape of the Fjallabak. Venturing into an area that rarely sees bikes, we cross lava fields and enjoy views of Mount Hekla, Iceland's most active volcano. After a relaxing night at the Landmannalaugar hot springs, biking through a series of river crossings takes us by way of the Eldgja Gorge to the foot of the Vatnajokull Icecap. Heading southwards, our cross-country bike route leads through a surreal black volcanic desert, with jagged mountains on one side and the Myrdalsjokull Icecap on the other. Our bike journey ends at Porsmork, close to the southern coast, after 6 full, unforgettable days of mountain biking across the interior of Iceland.
FAT TYRE ADVENTURE. This is real wilderness mountain biking, with the landscape changing dramatically each day. We will average between 40 and 70 kilometres of biking each day. Whilst these distances are not extreme, the changeable weather and the sometimes tricky route conditions will contribute to our having some quite tough days. We will be riding for between 4 and 8 hours each day and the conditions that we can expect to encounter will not suit inexperienced mountain bikers. Part of the route will be on dirt and gravel tracks, but we will try to get away from these as much as possible. There are many river crossings, some of which can be thigh deep. Off road experience and a good level of fitness are essential for this trip, which is aimed at regular weekend mountain bikers who are looking for an adventure and for a chance to ride in a truly unique environment. One thing to bear in mind, however, is that we will enjoy near-constant daylight. So, it will never be too dark to ride! The weather will play a big part in how hard the bike trip will be and all we say about this is that it will be totally unpredictable and can at times present a challenge in itself. Not for the faint hearted, this is a real wilderness adventure.
