Ridges and Summits of BulgariaWild mountain walking holiday adventure trekking in the Rila and Pirin mountains of Bulgaria. Lying at the cusp of Europe and Asia Minor, the dramatic mountain scenery of the Rila and Pirin mountains of Bulgaria is simply breathtaking. Our walking holiday explores this fascinating country by combining the hospitality of Bulgaria with superb mountain trekking. Following an ascent of the country’s highest peak, Musala (2971m/9748ft) we make a 2-day walking traverse of the extensive Rila Mountains, via Razdela (2669m/8757ft) and the ornate Rila Monastery, to the Pirin Mountains. Here, we continue the trekking as we climb the imposing peaks of Vihren (2914m/9561ft) and Kotelo (2908m/9541ft), by way of some airy walking along the spectacular Marble Ridge, before setting off for 2-days trekking deep into the Pirin Range. A seemingly infinite series of broad, ridge-top, waymarked walking paths above isolated lakes and alpine meadows, takes us to the shores of the atmospheric ‘Dark Lake’. An overnight here, in a remote and rustic mountain hut surrounded by stunning Pirin peaks and perhaps in the company of the shy chamois, is yet another unforgettable highlight of this excellent mountain walking holiday adventure in amazing Bulgaria.

Trip Guide

This is a real mountain journey with significant amounts of ascent and descent on most days. The trails are predominantly good paths but sections of stony ground and boulders will be encountered. There is very little exposure on either the ridges or summits and any exposed sections are cable protected. As with any mountain area the weather can be unpredictable but we would anticipate good conditions for each of our scheduled departures. With the exception of the first and last day you will walk for an average of 7 to 9 hours each day, with some significant climbs and descents. However by using a support vehicle and with careful itinerary design, there is the option to take one or more “rest” days during the week. This trip is suitable for regular, experienced hillwalkers, looking for an excellent week’s mountain walking in a largely undiscovered part of the world.
