Accessible once again, after decades in isolation, the neighbouring countries of Laos and Cambodia offer a glimpse of SE Asia at its most traditional. Travelling to this alluring region by way of northern Thailand, we cross the mighty Mekong to enter Laos. From Luang Nam Tha, we enjoy 3 days of trekking in a landscape of deeply-cut valleys which presents a picturesque mosaic of forest and farmland. We will have the chance to meet and experience the distinctive cultures of several of the fascinating local hilltribes; Black Tai, Lanten, Kalom, Hmong and Akha. After a riverboat cruise and a visit to the famous Pak Ou Caves, we spend time in Luang Prabang, with its colourful market, orange-robed monks and many monasteries. Flying south via the laid-back Laotian capital of Vientiane to Siem Reap in Cambodia, a final 2 days of exploring amongst the astounding, 1000-year-old Temples of Angkor will include all of the most important sights.
This is not a long or extended trekking holiday and the altitudes attained are not significant. There are 5 days which include an element of trekking and these vary between 4 and 8 hours in duration. We will trekking on forest trails, farm tracks and dirt roads, with a fair bit of up and down and some slippery underfoot conditions. The humidity and heat can be a factor, as can difficult underfoot conditions while trekking in the Laotian jungle. The trip also includes a couple of long days of travelling, by boat and by road.
