With its palm-fringed beaches and welcoming people, Thailand is a deservedly popular travel destination. There is, however, much more to this charming Buddhist Kingdom than sun and sand, as this exciting adventure holiday will show. After a day's sightseeing in bustling Bangkok, we take the sleeper train north to Chiang Mai, a city of 300 temples and an unmissable night market. Trekking and riding on elephant-back, we visit a number of hilltribe villages in this area, staying overnight in a village house. We then follow the 'Sky Road' through dramatic mountain scenery to Um Phang, close to the Burmese border. Here, within a unique landscape of jungle-clad crags and amazing multi-tiered waterfalls, we follow forest trails and use inflatable rafts as we journey between the isolated villages of the Karen people. Two nights at a laid-back bungalow resort on the stunning beach of Ao Nang, close to Krabi, is a fitting way to conclude this veritable Thai spectacular.

This is not a long or extended trekking holiday and the altitudes attained are not significant. There are 6 days which include an element of trekking, which is usually between 4 and 6 hours in duration, following forest trails, farm tracks and dirt roads, with a fair bit of up and down and some slippery underfoot conditions. The final trekking day is a little longer but there will be the opportunity to ride on elephant-back for parts of the trek. River rafting (using specialist rubber craft and trained river guides) also forms a part of the trip on 3 days. Most of this rafting is very straightforward, but one stretch does include rapids of up to River Grade 3, which equates with exciting, but safe conditions. Comprehensive instruction is given by our professional river guides prior to boarding the rafts and full safety equipment is used.
