In the far north of Sweden, close to the border with Norway, the Abisko National Park encloses one of Europe's largest remaining areas of wilderness. 200 kilometres / 125 miles beyond the Arctic Circle, this is the land of the the reindeer-herding Sami people, where the midnight sun illuminates endless birch forests, beautiful lakes, stunning waterfalls and snow-capped peaks. Overnighting in a series of comfortable mountain huts, this schools itinerary follows the northern end of the Kungsleden or King's Trail and culminates in a guided ascent of Kebnekaise (6986 ft), Sweden's highest mountain.
Educational perspective
The group will carry lightweight backpacks throughout the trek and prepare their own food at most of the huts a lesson in self-reliance.
