The Cordillera Blanca is the foremost of the Andean mountain ranges, with more than thirty 6000 metre (19,000 foot) peaks and truly spectacular scenery. It has some of the best and most popular trekking routes in South America, as well as the potential for breathtaking new routes - such as this one. After 2 days of preparation at the vibrant market town of Huaraz, we start out by way of Laguna Churup and the Quebrada Quilcayhuanca. At the head of this valley, with only vicunas and condors for company, we cross the Cho Cho Pass (5100m/16,728ft). and then the glaciated Palcaraju Pass (5300m/17,384ft), to reach the upper Ishinka Valley. Here, there is the chance to climb the straightforward peak of Urus (5495m/18,023ft), before crossing the Aquillpo Pass and descending the valley of the same name to the roadhead. A 2-week holiday which promises superb trekking and some of the best views in the Blanca.

This trek offers a variety of underfoot conditions, ranging from good trails in the lower valleys of the Cordillera Blanca, to steep paths across scree on the approach to the highest passes on our route. The highest passes may have a light covering of snow and we will also cross some glaciated terrain, which will involve roping the group together. Overall, the trekking is quite straightforward and we will usually be walking for around 6 hours each day. We have allowed time for acclimatisation in and around the town of Huaraz prior to setting off on trek. When in the Ishinka Valley, there is the opportunity to take a rest day. However, on this day there will also be the option (weather permitting) to climb an accessible peak above our camp. Urus provides non-technical climbing on scree, followed by an upper section on low angle snow slopes. Crampons, a single ice-axe and a climbing harness are needed for the glacier crossings for this optional peak.
