This fun-packed family adventure in the Canadian Rockies starts in Calgary and finishes in Edmonton. The focus of our attention in this beautiful part of the world is the Athabasca River, which has its source amongst the glaciers and 3000 metre peaks of the Jasper National Park and flows for more than 1500 kilometres across Canada. A number of Indian tribes, including the Cree, hunted and fished along the Athabasca River, prior to the white man’s arrival in the area. With the advent of the fur trade in the early 19th century, Iroquois Indians also came into this area. The upper section of the valley of the Athabasca River has played a significant role in the development of the Canadian west for almost 200 years. Nowadays, incorporated within the Jasper National Park, this territory offers excellent hiking and canoeing. Flying in via Calgary, this fun-packed family adventure starts out with 4 days at a lakeside campground outside Banff, our base for easy day-hiking and fun mountain biking above picturesque Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. We then head north to the David Thompson Ranch Resort, where we meet our wranglers and enjoy an afternoon of horseback riding. En route to Jasper, we stop off for more hiking, including the excursion to Wilcox Pass (2375m. / 7792ft.) where we have truly spectacular views of the Columbia Icefields. Finally, after a day's canoe training, we begin the 4-day descent of the Athabasca River, which is the undoubted highlight of the trip. Perfectly suited to families and novice canoeists, this is a fantastic experience, traversing uninhabited territory and featuring riverside camps and the chance to spot beaver, elk and bear. An unforgettable family holiday offering the very best of the Canadian Rockies.
