Grade 6
At the junction of France, Italy and Switzerland, the glaciated massif of Mont Blanc is circled by one of the world’s great long-distance walks – the Tour du Mont Blanc. We have incorporated a number of scenic variants in our schools version of this itinerary, opting to take the high-level route where possible. En route, we stay in a mix of basic hotels and comfortable mountain refuges, many of them dramatically situated, like the Cabane d’Orny and the lakeside Chalet du Lac Blanc. Expect breathtaking views, Alpine meadow trails, picturesque hamlets and an abundance ofcolourful wildflowers.
Educational perspective
Thrust up by the ongoing collision of the European and African tectonic plates and eroded by 2 million years of glaciation, the landscape of the European Alps reflects these conflicting processes.
Amend or Extend
A shorter and easier version of the Tour du Mont Blanc can be completed in just 8 days, using valley-based accommodation, picking out the best of the daily stages and with limited vehicle transfers.
