This exciting schools expedition takes in the history, culture and geography of Libya. Libya is now opening its doors to tourism and more and more people are discovering the warm welcome and fantastic offerings of this Saharan country where Africa meets the Middle East. As well as visiting some of the famous classical sites Libya has to offer, this schools adventure will take you off the beaten track into one of the wildest and most beautiful regions of the Sahara. In the far south-west of Libya, the Acacus Mountains are characterised by magnificent rock formations, impressive canyons or wadis and gigantic sand dunes. This area is home to the Tuareg, the 'Blue People', veiled aristocrats of the desert whose nomadic way of life has changed little for centuries. On our 5-day exploration of this dramatic landscape, accompanied by Tuareg guides and their camels, we will trek between waterholes, scramble to rocky viewpoints and stop off to visit amazing rock art sites, dating back 12,000 years. On our return to Tripoli, this exciting schools expedition includes an excursion to the peerless Roman city of Leptis Magna on the Mediterranean coast. Educational perspective
Thousands of years ago, this part of the Sahara was wetter than it is today and supported many of the African wildlife species. The rock-art that we will see depicts animals such as elephant, giraffe and rhino.
Amend or Extend
Add a day to visit the other great Roman site close to Tripoli - Sabratha, with its magnificent theatre. Or, have a final day of relaxation on the beach.
