Grade 5
Roraima (2875m) is the biggest of numerous flat-topped mountains or 'tepuis' in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. Travelling to this remote location via Caracas and the Pemon Indian settlement at Pareitepuy, we begin a 6-day trek into the unknown. Walking through open grassland and then cloud forest, we make an exciting final ascent to Roraima’s summit, with superb flower and bird spotting opportunities. We then travel to the Orinoco Delta and have a 2-day exploration by boat of its creeks and channels. Here, we can meet the local people, fish for piranhas and see lots of amazing wildlife. A 2-night stay at a beachfront posada on the Caribbean coast nicely rounds off this excellent schools itinerary.
Educational perspective
The tepuis of the Gran Sabana have been formed by erosion of a sandstone plateau that once covered the whole area between the Amazon and the Orinoco. They are the oldest exposed rock formations on earth.
Amend or Extend
Adventurous groups might consider including the approach to Angel Falls, the world's highest, which can be reached by a small-plane flight and an exciting motorised canoe journey.
