Baikal is the world's largest freshwater lake by volume estimated to hold 20% of the world's fresh water, and it is the world’s deepest lake with a depth of 1,637 meters (5,371 ft). Baikal’s impressive size is matched by its equally impressive location in Southern Siberia, surrounded by mountains rising to over 2500 metres (8,000ft). The eastern shoreline is densely wooded - part of the 'Taiga', a band of trees which stretches across Eurasia and North America. During the harsh Siberian winter the lake is entirely frozen over and it is possible to walk out to the islands. This exciting new KE itinerary explores the frozen world of Lake Baikal from its shores to the central islands and travels on foot, by snowmobile, dogsled, skis and even ice hovercraft for maximum adventure. During the trip we have a two day visit to Olkhon Island, the summer home of the shamanistic Buryats, enjoy traditional ‘banya’ or steam saunas, and we try our hand at ice fishing. This fantastic multi-activity adventure in an altogether stunning part of the world is the antidote to ordinary holidays.
