Cuba is the biggest island in the Caribbean, with a landscape that varies from rugged peaks and fertile farmland to endless tropical, white-sand beaches. Aiming to see as much as possible of this diversity, we begin our unique 'Three Peaks' adventure with a trek to the top of Pan de Guajaibon (699m) in the lovely western province of Pinar del Rio. We then drive to the Bay of Pigs on the south coast and have the opportunity to swim in a natural pool or 'cenote'. Transferring to the reserve area of Topes de Collantes, we follow forest trails to the summit of Potrerillo (931m) and also take some time out at a beach hotel in Trinidad. Continuing our eastward journey, we reach the Sierra Maestra and begin a 3-day trek that will take us to Cuba's high point at Pico Turquino (1975m). Castro has recently stepped down as president and other changes are likely - visit Cuba now to see it at its best.
Trip Guide
This trip aims to give a good overview of Cuba from a trekkers’ perspective. In order to see as much of the island as possible there are a number of half day transfers during which we will stop at various famous or noteworthy sites. The trekking is a mix of easier half day walks and more challenging hikes, including ascents of the three highest peaks in Cuba. On the longer hikes we will be walking for 5 - 7 hours in a day. Accommodation is a mix of hotels (3 and 4 star) and we will also use mountain huts or camp in remote areas. The underfoot terrain we will encounter will vary but in general we will be following established trails and the going is nowhere very difficult. We have given this trip the overall grade of MODERATE.
