On the south side of the rugged Sorrentine Peninsula, which separates the gulfs of Naples and Salerno, the famously picturesque Amalfi Coast is a region of steep cliffs and sheltered coves, with numerous small towns interspersed by terraced farmland where olive and lemon trees are grown. Our introduction to this charming part of Italy is a ferry ride out to the Isle of Capri, with the chance to explore amongst its villas and gardens and to take a swim, before returning to Naples. We then visit the fascinating remains of the Roman town of Pompei and also enjoy an easy walk to the summit of Vesuvius (1280m). As a splendid finale, we have 3 days of hiking on ancient mule tracks above Amalfi, including the spectacular 'Walk of the Gods' which leads down from Agerola to the steep, narrow streets of the picture postcard fishing village of Positano. This is an easy walking week with a real flavour of Italy.
Trip Guide
This hotel-based walking week allows us to see all the major tourist attractions of this beautiful corner of southern Italy. We start out with 3 easy sightseeing days; on the Island of Capri, in the city of Naples and at Pompei and Vesuvius. Each of these days has just 2 to 3 hours of walking, including the easy 200 metre ascent to the top of the volcano, Vesuvius. Then, after moving to a hotel in Agerola, we have 3 further days of hiking on the south side of the Sorrentine Peninsula. On each of these days, we will walk for around 5 hours on good trails with some stepped sections. Most of the walking on this part of the trip is actually downhill towards the sea.
