The highest peak in Greece and renowned as the home of the gods, Mount Olympus rises directly out of the Agean Sea. From our hotel in Litohoro, a day-hike through the forested and pleasantly shaded Mavrolongos Gorge provides a great start to the trip. We then begin our ascent, with an 1100 metre climb on a good trail to the superbly situated Refuge Spilios Agapitos. From here, we enjoy a memorable hike on an airy ridge to the subsidiary peaks of Skala and Skolio and then, on the following day, tackle the true summit of Mytikas (2917m), which involves some easy scrambling. The splendid view from top encompasses the Agean Sea and lots of rugged mountain scenery. Descending the mountain via an alternative route provides us with a range of new perspectives. With its pine-forested lower slopes and upland meadows rich in wild flowers, this dramatic mountain provides a brilliant objective for a week-long walking holiday.
Trip Guide
Aiming to see as much as possible of the impressive rocky massif of Mount Olympus, we spend 4 nights on the mountain and have included 3 days of hikes to its various summits. After a useful warm-up hike (downhill) in the Mavrolongos Gorge, we ascend on a good trail to the Spilios Agapitos Refuge, high on the east side of the mountain. Above this refuge, we follow scant mountain trails and also do some easy scrambling, especially on the ascent to the mountain's high point, Mytikas. We will be hiking for an average of 5 hours on each of 6 days and on several of these days there will be 700 to 1000 metres of ascent. The trip is suitable for regular weekend hillwalkers and those who are experienced scramblers will be able to make the optional ascent of Mytikas. Expect hot sunshine during the day and cooler evenings and mornings high on the mountain.
