demanding
From Manali in the Kulu Valley, this adventurous trek heads west into the mountains of the Pir Panjal, a remote and little-visited area that is home to nomadic Gaddi shepherds during the summer months. Trekking through untouched forest and upland meadows, we climb to cross the spectacular Kaliheni La (4710m) where the views extend to glaciers and snow-capped peaks in all directions. Beyond this pass, we trek for 2 days in a beautiful hidden valley, losing height steadily en route to the isolated village of Bara Bhangal. After a rest day, it's up again, following good shepherds trails to eventually reach the moraine, snow and ice of the Thamser Pass (4930m). Here, we cross the watershed of the Dhaula Dhar range and begin our long descent into the Kangra Valley. Before returning to Delhi, this exceptional new itinerary makes time for a visit to McLeodganj, colourful home of the Dalai Lama.
Trip Guide
This is a demanding trip, involving 10 days of trekking in a remote region, where trails may be indistinct. Most days are long and especially those days when we cross the high passes of our route, the Kaliheni Pass and the Thamser Pass. The average altitude of the trip is quite high at around 3600 metres (11,800 feet) and at the highest points on the trip we will be walking on rough moraine and glacier ice. Participants should be physically fit and comfortable with walking for up to 8 hours each day on a variety of terrain.
The trip pages are only a brief summary of the details available within our trip dossiers. It is important that you read the full day to day description and further information for this trip before making your booking.
