Walking trails above the Chamonix Valley - The French AlpsThis very enjoyable holiday offers 6 days of guided hiking amongst the superlative scenery of the Mont Blanc Massif. Our day-walks are selected to provide diversity of length and terrain, through pine-scented forest and Alpine meadow, across high cols into wild valleys, with the ever-present backdrop of famous peaks. Using guides with considerable local knowledge, we will explore some of the classic walks of the Chamonix Valley, such as Montroc to the Possettes Ridge, Col des Montets to Lac Blanc and Vallorcine to the Lac d'Emosson. Expanding our horizons, we will also travel into Italy and make the ascent via the Rifugio Walter Bonatti to the sublime viewpoint peak known as the Tęte Entre Deux Sauts (2729m). Finally, we will cross the border into Switzerland and hike up from Finhault to the Col de Fenestral. This week-long holiday provides the perfect introduction to Alpine walking.

Trip Guide

This is a superb walking week at the heart of the European Alps. Every day during the week, we have a classic walk which will follow good and well-marked trails. Some of the walks make use of cable-car lifts (either up or down) to allow us to access the most interesting areas more easily or to save tired legs at the end of the day. The average distance covered each day is around 10 to 15 kilometres (6 – 9 miles) and there is usually a fair amount of ascent and descent. However, the trip is intended as an introduction to Alpine walking and the routes have been chosen carefully to ensure that they are not too tough and we tackle them at a moderate pace with time to stop and take in the scenery. Since this trip is comprised of a series of day-walks from our base in Argentiere, there is always the option to spend a rest day in the valley, rather than tackle the next day’s walk, if you are feeling tired. Additionally, the day-walk format means that you do not need to carry more than a small daypack. We have given this trip the overall grade of MODERATE.
