From Vizzavona, this excellent trek heads through the most mountainous part of the island, following sections of the GR20 pathway. Beyond the Col de la Haute Route, we set up our first camp at Grotelle and from there hike to the airy summit of Corsica's second highest mountain, Monte Rotondo (2622m). Continuing via high ridge trails and rocky passes, we visit rustic refuges and stop to take our picnic lunches beside blue mountain lakes. After our ascent of the striking pyramidal peak of Paglia Orba, we turn our attention towards the island’s highest peak, Monte Cinto (2706m). During the course of a long day, we climb this peak from the south-west, crossing scree and bare rock slabs, with some easy scrambling. We have time to admire the magnificent summit views, before descending northwards via an alternative route to Haut Asco. This superb short holiday offers a taste of the real Corsica.
Trip Guide
This is only a short trip, but we pack a lot in. For a period of 6 days, we will be walking and scrambling for an average of around 7 hours a day. This is a trip for fit and competent hill-walkers and scramblers. We have devised a tough mountain itinerary which is played out on rugged terrain. Some of the paths that we follow are way-marked routes, such as the GR20. Other parts of the route are on little-used tracks and trails, with a lot of ascent and descent and a considerable amount of scrambling. Because this route cannot be fully vehicle-supported, group members will carry their sleeping bags and essential overnight items on approximately half of the walking days.
