Totally Tropical Trekking in the Dominica
Dominica, Trek & Walk, 10 days - from £1,695 (land only) - from €2,035 (land only) - from $2,795 (land only)
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Roseau. KE Land Only package services begin with a single timed airport transfer to the group hotel. We meet with our guide and enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: From Scotts Head Peninsula we walk along segment 1. Leaving the sparkling sea behind, we head uphill to the summit of the volcano Morne Crabier where we have sweeping views of Soufriere Bay, the peninsula and the island of Martinique on the horizon. We descend to Soufriere Sulphur Springs and then our hotel slightly further along the trail.
Day 3: Today we have our first views of the lush tree clad mountains of the Moren Trios Pitons National Park. A true reflection of the unspoilt nature of the island the trail meanders through forest dense with ferns, bamboos and heliconias, with several panoramic view opportunities down to the coast. We walk through small villages and old plantation areas to end in the village of Wotten Waven.
Day 4: A day to explore some of Dominica's sights as well as experience the colourful culture. We start with a visit to Trafalgar Waterfalls, followed with a 1hr walk around Fresh Water Lake, Dominica's largest, at 800m above sea level. Back in Roseau we enjoy a Caribbean style cooking lesson where we prepare our own dishes and desserts. We then transfer to our accommodation near Pont Casse.
Day 5: One of our longest walking days on the Waitukubuli Trail, around 16km, approx 7 hrs. We still have opportunities for dips in the rivers and interacting with the farmers & villagers along the way, taking in the fun loving lifestyle commonly associated with the Caribbean people. We walk through lush rainforest full of flowering bromeliads and song birds, ending in Castle Bruce for the night.
Day 6: Today we explore the wild east coast. We have a short hike to Glasse (natural pools) where we see caves etched into the rugged volcanic shoreline. From here we continue to Victoria Falls, probably the most impressive on the island (like it's namesake!) and Sari Sari falls. The walk takes us through forest, crossing rivers and some easy scrambling over large boulders to the refreshing pools.
Day 7: Walking along the most easterly segment of the trail we meet Dominica's indigenous people, the Kalinago, giving us insight into their culture and lifestyles whilst providing excellent walking on the rugged Atlantic coastline. The terrain is open, undulating and along ridges with fabulous views. We pass through Kalinago hamlets selling handicrafts. Overnight apartment Picard, Portsmouth.
Day 8: We start with a gentle flat walk of 7km, before entering thick jungle for the remainder of the walk, totalling 20km. We may see parrots and wildlife in this remote section as we make our way below the towering trees, farmlands, and volcanic rocks. An interesting interlude is the remnants of the railway tracks at Brandy. A transfer takes us to our overnight at Picard, Portsmouth.
Day 9: Our last day on the trail passes through small communities and takes us along the paradise coastline offering splendid views of the neighbouring French Islands including Guadeloupe to the North. We end with a ride in a fishing vessel along the bay before returning to our accommodation in Picard, Portsmouth. We then head off for a celebratory dinner.
Day 10: We end our holiday on this idyllic Caribbean island with a single timed transfer to the airport where KE Land Only package services end.
