Travelling by way of Reykjavik to Narsarsuaq at the southern tip of Greenland, this is a journey into a wild part of the world little changed since its colonisation by the Viking explorer, Erik the Red, in the year 985. Inhabited by Norse people for 4 centuries, it is now home to Inuit fishermen and hunters, whose brightly-painted houses add colour to this dramatic region of mountains, lakes, fjords and icebergs. During 10 days of exploration, boat transfers will help us access the most exciting locations including the sites of the original Viking settlements. There is basic accommodation in the form of farmstays and hostels at each of the places we visit. Hiking on coastal and riverside trails and across meadows of alpine flowers, to low summits such as Najaat (770m) and Nuuluk (824m), the views of mountains, glaciers and sheer rock walls plunging into the sea will take our breath away. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Please note that we are selling this trip in conjunction with our partners at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading independent adventure travel operators) and with our Icelandic ground agent. As a result, these groups, which are led by an English-speaking Icelandic guide, may have an interesting cosmopolitan mix.
Is this holiday for you?
This trip involves only moderate or easy hiking with mostly good underfoot conditions. On most days, we will walk and explore for around 6 hours, before checking in at (or returning) to our lodge or hostel accommodation. The holiday is entirely at low elevation and its grading reflects in part the remote location. This holiday is suitable for any regular hikers with a spirit of adventure.
