In Search of Erik the Red - Greenland Trek
Day 1: Arrive at Keflavik Airport. A transfer (approx 40 mins) is provided to the group's guesthouse accommodation in Reykjavik. KE Land Only package services begin with the overnight at the group guesthouse in Reykjavik.
Day 2: Depending on the flight time, there may be some free time in Reykjavik. Then, we transfer to the 'domestic' airport on the edge of the city and fly to Narsarsuaq. We transfer by boat to Ittileq and walk for 2 hours to Igaliku (Gardar) with its unusual red sandstone houses and beautiful church. Overnight in a hostel.
Day 3: Exploring north of Igaliku, we hike to a level area at around 200 metres elevation and enjoy fantastic views over Qoorqut Fjord, normally dotted with icebergs. We return to our hostel accommodation after 5 or 6 hours.
Day 4: Our riverside walk today (6 hours in total) takes us past waterfalls and around the hill known as Nuuluk (824m) and back to Ittileq. From here, we take a boat to Qassiarssuq, once home to Erik the Red. There are a number of Viking remains, some of them reconstructed, Overnight in a farm lodge at Qorlortoq.
Day 5: Hiking via pretty lakes and grassy hillsides with grazing sheep, we reach a viewpoint for Breidafjord and then drop down to Nunataaq after 5 to 7 hours walking. Overnight at a lodge on a sheep farm.
Day 6: Today, we climb the mountain known as Nunakullaq, which affords views across Breidafjord to distant glaciers. Walking on the edge of the fjord, we then return after 6 hours exploration to spend a second night at Nunataaq.
Day 7: Heading back to the east side of the peninsula, we cross moorland and pasture, rich with wild flowers, whilst keeping a look out for white-tailed sea eagles. Arriving at the tiny settlement of Sillisit on the edge of Eirik's Fjord, after 5 to 7 hours of walking, we spend the next 2 nights at a farm lodge.
Day 8: The mountain, Najaat (770m), is our objective for the day! Passing sheep and small lakes surrounded by cotton grass, we reach a great viewpoint for glaciers and mountains towards both the west and east. We return, after 5 to 6 hours, to spend a second night in Sillisit.
Day 9: We have a morning's walk to see some Viking ruins, before taking the boat across the fjord and possibly amongst icebergs, to Narsarsuaq. Time to explore at Narsarsuaq and overnight in a hostel. 5 to 6 hours walking.
Day 10: Today we hike to the outlet glacier at the bottom of the valley, passing at first through a flower-filled valley, then ascending steeply for 300 meters to a viewpoint. Close by, we can actually touch the Sermia Glacier, part of the Greenland Icecap. We return after 5 to 7 hours to Narsarsuaq.
Day 11: After packing our bags, there is time to visit the local museum, before taking the flight back to Reykjavik, where we transfer to our guesthouse accommodation.
Day 12: We transfer to Keflavik Airport where KE Land Only package services end.
